South Asian Lightning Awareness Programme in Bangladesh Part and also involved with Bhutan and Sri Lankan Part This programme was managed from Winrock India funded from Winrock USA from main funding of USAID

Several Lightning Programmes were conducted with assistance from Department of Physics, Colombo University and SATRIC, Colombo. Organised Lightning awareness Programme in Dhaka and in Jahangirnagar University. Organised a Lightning Awareness Training programme in Chittagong.

Support to Network of Fish Sanctuary Committees in Purbadhala under ICLARM

TARA has been engaged by CBFM-Community Based Fisheries Management Programme of ICLARM to support Fish Sanctuary activities in Purbadhala area. This programme is for June to August 2002. However, ICLARM will continue this activities for next five years.

Fish Sanctuary with CIDA funded DWMP

TARA is working with Canadian CIDA Funded Dampara Water Management Project (DWMP) in Purbadhala, Netrokona and Phulpur, Mymensingh. The main activities of TARA is to assist the project along with other two local and technical NGOs and Department of Fisheries to establish 2 regular beel sanctuaries, 3 semi sanctuaries, 20 mini sanctuaries, 1 leaseholders sanctuary, 3 river sanctuaries and preparing guideline on fish friendly operation of regulators.


Presentation of TARA assisted DWMP work at ICLARM Workshop, FRI, Mymensingh

Recently on behalf of TARA and DWMP the Executive Director of TARA presented fisheries activities (Openwater and aquaculture where TARA provided technical support) of DWMP on the regional orientation of CBFM Phase II held in FRI Mymensingh on 23-24 January 2002.

Aquacultural Activities with CIDA funded DWMP

TARA supported DWMP and DoF in implementation of the following aquacultural activities including training and demonstration sites in Purbadhala and Phulpur areas of Netrokona and Mymensingh Districts:

Stocking in small floodplains by the Community

It may be mentioned that resource persons from ICLARM twice invited and they took effective sessions in the training programme for the farmers. Further, World Bank team has visited some aquacultural activities and fish sanctuary sites of that area recently.

Aquacultural Activities with ICLARM

Under the Development of Sustainable Aquaculture Project (DSAP) of Iclarm funded by USAID, TARA has been working as Associate Partner (AP-NGO) since May 2002 for three years in Netrokona, office based in Birishiri, Durgapur.

Children and Human Rights

TARA is working on children and destitute women in the jails and outside. Recently donated cloths to the 62 children and women in the Dhaka Central Jail. TARA has also started survey in eastern part of Badda to identify the households and nature and extent of Child Domestic Workers.

The TARA school centre is in low income area of Badda and mainly for the minor boys and girls. The adult education centre of Northeast Badda is also supported by TARA. The Nursery and the Environmental Awareness programmes are in Tangail. The Collection of Used Polybags under our Solid Waste Management Programme is in Mohakhali. The female group members of TARA have been collecting used polybags to improve the environment.

Presently TARA is working in aquaculture, openwater and fisher community. Programme on Fish Culture in Slums ( Chari in the Bari) is in Karail Slum area Mohakhali and in Nama Para East Badda. CAGES programme is in Nama Para, Dhaka and in Purbadhala, Netrokona. In some areas groups are further stocking fishes with their own resources but TARA is still providing technical assistance. This year fish fingerligs released in the beels/floodplains and rivers under Openwater Fry Releasing Scheme. This programme will continue in next year. Apart from this TARAs fisheries field staff are motivating fisher community in Savar for conservation of brood fishes under our Fisher Community, Conservation and Fish Sanctuary Programme. This programme ultimately lead to establish river/beel fish sanctuaries and kua sanctuaries to proptect and promote fish production and to maintain fish biodiversity.

TARA has completed data entry and preliminary process of baseline survey forms on "Disester Preparedness". The recent programme that TARA has initiated is Distribution of Old Cloths among the poor.

It may be mentioned that several members of the Executive and General Body are renouned fisheries experts and socio and community expert who has long experience in working in different fisheries and other projects.

Integrated Haor Area Development Work.

Assisted in implementation of plantation on embankment, vetiver and grass turfing, fish sanctuary, protection of aquatic vegetation, snail and pearl bearing mussel, floating duck farm, wave breaker for homestead protection, model fishpass, broodfish bank, plantation of hizal in the lowlands and beel/canal perifery.
