introduction

TARA-Technological Assistance for Rural Advancement is a non-profit, no-Government organisation established in January 1998. TARA is registered in Bangladesh with NGO Affairs Bureau, Department of Social Services and under Society Act of Joint Stock Company. Main objective of TARA is to uplift socio-economic condition of poor people through technological assistance. TARA provide technological assistance to community, Community Based Organisations, NGOs, Projects etc for coordinated development. TARAs major working areas are: Openwater Fisheries, Aquaculture, Research, Juvenile Justice, Thunder Lightning Awareness. Though TARA works in different parts of Bangladesh but also provide assistance to raise awareness on Lightning safety Issues in South Asian Countries and intends to support in other countries also.

It is established by a group of highly professionals and skilled manpower worked in various national and international services, to carry on activities of human welfare and rural development for poverty alleviation.

TARA is committed to improving the well-being and livelihood at rural society through management and communication or locally available resources.

LEGAL STATUS

TARA is registered with the office of the NGO Bureau and Social Welfare Department. TARA is also registered with Joint Stock Company under the society Act XXI of 1860. The registration numbers are 1454/99, Dha 04693/99 and S-2029(62)/98 for NGO Bureau, Social Welfare and Joint Stock Company respectively. Applied for membership with Bangladesh National Biodiversity Group (BNBG) of IUCN.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Sustainable Development:

Strengthening the capacity of rural community to integrate knowledge on agricultural, forest, livestock and fisheries to support sustainable development. Motivate fishers, who get their livelihood from fisheries, to undertake development programmes such as pond fish culture, fry, raising, small-scale hatchery, fish culture in open water (Pen and cage culture), etc., to minimize their pressure on capture fisheries.

Family Planning:

Initiate awareness programms on health and sanitation, family planing, pollution, effect of habitat destruction, biodiversily conservation.

Research and Study and Consultancy:

Conduct Action Research on the impact of various development programmes and suggest policies improvement, facilitating and disseminating methodical knowledge to improve the production, management and conduction of research and consultancy.

Environment:

Identify and record indigenous knowledge and technologies and suggest farmers to drop them discouraging the chemicals and fertilizers based crop production trend.

Provide support to the small-scale fish Farmers for marketing their products avoiding middle man stockholder systems to ensure their rights and price.

Fisheries:

Provide support to culture and openwater fisheries. Motivate fisher community.

Cooperation:

Expand links with other partner development agencies to undertake collaborative programmes.

Target Group/Beneficiaries

The main target group of TARA is vulnerable women and children. We have limited group in different parts of Bangladesh including slum area, which has been expanding now.
